Gdzieś we wszechświecie rzucają kości i przypadkiem wypada twoja kolej. I odtąd zwyciężyć lub przegrać - to tylko kwestia szczęścia. Borys Pasternak

.Ï% When dragging an object to move it, holding down Ctrl creates a copy of the object, leaving the original in place.285Part 4: Adding Graphics and PrintingChapter 10Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Inside OutHolding down the Alt key causes the following constraint:Ï% You can hold down Alt while creating objects to use the gridlines on a worksheet as adrawing grid. The edges of your objects are then forced to follow the gridlines. If youuse Shift and Alt together to draw a square or a circle aligned to the grid, Excel does itsbest, but the result might not be perfect. This is because the default height and width ofthe cells on a worksheet might not provide an ideal grid for perfect squares or circles.Inside OutEnter The Object ZoneWhen you work with objects, it s almost as if there s another program with a transparentdesktop that floats over the worksheet as if the objects you draw are in another dimen-sion.In a sense, they are. What goes on in the grid of Excel has little to do with what goeson in the drawing layer we ll call The Object Zone, although you do have opportunities tocreate interaction between object and worksheet using macros and formulas. When you are working normally in cells, you can click on any graphic object to select it, andthen click in the worksheet to select cells. You can hop back and forth, no problem. However, when you click the Select Objects button (the arrow) on the Drawing toolbar, you enter TheObject Zone, where you cannot select a cell to save your life. This button is a toggle you rein The Object Zone until you click it again. This essentially locks out the worksheet so thatyou can toil in that phantom program to your heart s content. This is handy when you aredoing a lot of graphic work, because it makes it easier to select and work with objects withoutworrying about inadvertently clicking the sheet and exiting The Object Zone. If you forgetthat you ve clicked the Select Objects button, you might experience a moment of panic, won-dering what happened, and worrying that perhaps Excel has crashed.Just look at the SelectObject button, which stays highlighted.Click it again to leave The Object Zone.Using Tear-Off PalettesMany of the submenus located on the Drawing toolbar are tear-off palettes. On the Draw menu, you can tear off the Order, Nudge, Align or Distribute, and Rotate or Flip submenus. Each sub-menu on the AutoShapes menu (except More AutoShapes, which is not a submenu) is a tear-offpalette in fact, you can tear off the entire AutoShapes menu itself, as shown in Figure 10-3.Click the selection bar (the three horizontal lines at the top of the menu) and drag it away.Youcan do the same with any menu or submenu that is displayed as a selection bar.286Part 4: Adding Graphics and PrintingChapter 10Part 3: Formatting and Editing WorksheetsCreating Spiffy Graphicsf10ie03Figure 10-3.Many of the submenus on the Drawing and AutoShapes menus are palettesyou can tear off by dragging.Creating Graphic ObjectsEach of the various object types available in Excel has strengths, idiosyncrasies, and issuesyou need to be aware of.In this section, we discuss these issues and describe the variousobject types in detail.Drawing Freehand Lines and PolygonsThe Line and Arrow buttons on the Drawing toolbar are extremely easy to use.Just click abutton on the toolbar, and then click and drag to create the object on the worksheet. But todraw lines other than simple straight lines and arrows, choose AutoShapes, Lines. The tools on the Lines submenu are as follows:Ï% The Line and Arrow buttons. These buttons work identically to the ones on theDrawing toolbar. They draw straight lines and arrows.Ï% The Double Arrow button.Draws arrows just as the Arrow button does, with anextra arrowhead.Ï% The Curve button.Draws smoothly curved lines between clicked points.Ï% The Freeform button.Draws combined freehand lines and straight lines.Ï% The Scribble button.Draws unconstrained lines.(However, when you release themouse button, the resulting line is smoothed somewhat.)The Freeform and Curve buttons are different from the others in that when you release themouse button, you re not done drawing. To finish drawing using either of these buttons, youmust either click the starting point to close the loop and create a solid object, or to create aline, double-click where you want the line to end.Figure 10-4 shows a few objects createdusing these buttons.287Part 4: Adding Graphics and PrintingChapter 10Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Inside Outf10ie04Figure 10-4.A sampling of objects created using the Curve, Freeform, and Scribble buttons. For example, if you click the Freeform button and then click anywhere on the worksheet orchart to begin drawing, the line remains anchored to the point you clicked. If you release themouse button, the line stretches from the anchor point to the cross-hair pointer like a rubberband. If you stretch the line and click again, you create a segment that is anchored betweenthe first and second point. You can continue this as long as you want, creating additional seg-ments with each new anchor point. You can also hold down the mouse button while using the Freeform button to create a free-hand line, or click points to create straight segments.By combining both of these methods, you can create a hybrid object with both straight and curved lines.Adjusting Freehand Shapes with the Edit Points CommandDrawing an attractive freehand line or polygon shape with a mouse can be challenging. If youhave difficulty dragging the shape you want, use the Edit Points command, which changes aline or polygon created with the Scribble, Curve, or Freeform buttons into a series of pointsyou can drag to reshape the object. To adjust a Scribble, Curve, or Freeform shape, right-click the object, and then choose EditPoints from the shortcut menu.(The Edit Points command also appears on the Draw menu.)A new set of handles appears, following the curves and corners of the object. You can thendrag as many of the handles as necessary to new positions. For example, we used the Free-form button to create the shape on the left in Figure 10-5, and then we selected the shape.Theshape on the right is the same freeform polygon after we chose Edit Points.Tip Add or delete Edit PointsAfter you choose Edit Points, you can add or delete any of the handles on an object. If youwant to clean up your drawing by eliminating some of the points, press the Ctrl key and clickeach handle you want to delete. If you want to add points, press Ctrl and click anywhere ona line where you want a handle to appear.288Part 4: Adding Graphics and PrintingChapter 10Part 3: Formatting and Editing WorksheetsCreating Spiffy Graphicsf10ie05Figure 10-5.When you choose Edit Points, handles appear at each vertex, as in the imageon the right.Adding the Edit Points Button to a ToolbarEdit Points is so useful for drawing freeform curves and polygons that you ll want to keep it handy. You might even want to add the Edit Points button to the existing Lines palette
